I recently rented the Nikon 35mm 1.4 lens from Lens Pro To Go because I was really interested in what kinds of things I can shoot with such a shallow depth of field. I have to say, I thought this was an incredibly sexy lens. Fast focusing, beautiful bokeh. I was just loving my time with it.
Now – I did run into a problem. I only had this lens for a week – and I was really really wanting to get out there and try something with the shot. So, off I went into Ybor city looking for things to check out and.. hopefully shoot pictures of.
There’s a bar in Ybor City called “The Boneyard” . One of the cool things about this place is that it has a bunch of Christmas lights hanging inside of it! Every time I go there, I want to make a shot with those lights. I was in Ybor to do a shoot that required night – and a model, so I was about 90 minutes early. I figured, why not.. let me pop in and get a drink.
I place my drink on the table to soak in the atmosphere and find a shot to experiment with. Panning left and right I made assesments of this area, of that area.. and just thought “This will never work..”
Until I looked down and saw where I put my drink.
I wish I could say something more insightful – that this was some planned out process to get X something out of it.. but it was just a drink.. on a table.. in a bar..
..and I couldn’t be happier with it.
So are you suggesting that togs need a drink to get their creative juices flowing? 😉
RC, check it out on my Smugmug…I made a similar image at Joe’s Crab Shack with a mug of beer. D700 24-70, LED penlight propped on an ash tray for backlight.

There’s a cleaner version on my NAPP portfolio, but I can’t access the NAPP site while at work.
Your HDR book will be delivered today! Cheers, dude!
